日本の株式市場も、失われた10年から復活の兆し、というようなニュースをちらほら聞きますけれども、こちらはイギリスの話題。

一度移植された心臓を除去し、再び自分の心臓で生きられるようになったのは、この少女がイギリス初です。

南ウェールズ　マウンテン・アッシュのハンナ・クラークちゃん(12)は、2月20日、『ピギーバック移植』されたドナーの心臓が拒絶反応を示したため、再び体外に取り出す手術を受けました。

ピギーバック移植とは、元々持っている心臓の外側に、ドナーから貰った心臓をおんぶ（ピギーバック）((「ピギーバック」、電子工作などでも使われる用語です。))するようにして移植することです。

この複雑は心臓摘出手術は、Magdi Yacoub卿（ハンナちゃんとのツーショット写真）の指導のもと行われました。氏は既に定年退職していましたが、ハンナの両親、ポールとエリザベス　クラーク夫妻に請われての復活です。

10年前、ハンナがまだ２さいのとき最初の移植手術は行われました。心筋症だった彼女は、手術によって命を救われました。この手術がなければ、彼女の心臓のサイズは2倍に肥大((心筋が肥大するけれど、心室が圧迫されて狭くなってしまい、ポンプとしての能力は下がってしまう、とのこと。))、一年と持たなかったでしょう。

彼女の身体が移植された心臓に拒絶反応を示しているのがわかったのは、昨年11月、医師による定期健診のとき。

母親のエリザベスさん　『最初、手術には8時間かかると聞かされました。しかし、4時間で終わりました。　また、数週間から数ヶ月の集中治療が必要だろうとも。初めてのケースだったので、検討がつかなかったんです。』

『でも、ハンナは順調に回復して、5日で退院することができました。誰もこんなに（元気に）なるって予想もつきませんでした。』

もうひとつの利点は、彼女は、もう強力な免疫抑制剤を飲む必要がなくなる、ということです。

ハンナ・クラークちゃんは、この数年、リンパ腫とも戦っています。でも、現在は、1月に行われた化学療法の成功により、回復状態にあります。

A young girl is believed to have become the first heart transplant patient in the United Kingdom to have her donor organ removed and her own heart brought back to life.

Hannah Clark, 12, of Mountain Ash, south Wales, had the pioneering operation carried out on February 20 after her body rejected her “piggy-back” heart.

The complicated procedure was carried out by surgeons advised by heart specialist Sir Magdi Yacoub, who came out of retirement at the request of Hannah’s parents, Paul and Elizabeth Clark.

The professor performed Hannah’s original transplant operation 10 years ago when she was just two years of age. That operation saved her life because she had cardiomyopathy, which made her heart double the size it should have been and therefore likely to give out within a year.

Hannah’s donor heart worked fine until last November when a routine visit to a cardiologist revealed that her body was rejecting it.

Mrs Clark said surgeons at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London were initially reluctant to remove the donor heart and reconnect the dormant one because they said it had never been done before.

Weeks later, the transplant team agreed to perform the life-saving operation and, at the family’s request, Sir Magdi provided surgeons with his vast expertise.

Mrs Clark said: “They were expecting it to take at least eight hours but she was out within four hours. They also said she could be in intensive care for weeks, maybe months. They just didn’t know because it was the first time it had been done.

“Hannah recovered so well she was able to come home within five days. Nobody thought she would be like she is now.”

A spokesman for the cardiac team at Great Street Ormond Hospital said: “We are delighted that Hannah is doing so well. We believe that this combination of circumstances is the first for children or adults in the UK.”
